During my usual quiet time this morning I noticed movement in the garden vegetation that was different than the birds and baby bunnies cause. And KABOOM ! – suddenly there was a brightly colored box turtle in our yard. Not exaggerating with the online photo below.

It was such bright orange I was not even certain it was a box turtle at first. This really was a wonder! So much so that I went on the back deck in my summer pajamas to try to capture a photo for Bob. (He was out mailing my letter and walking the beagle.) Needless to say the photo was not much more than proof that it appeared in the yard. It seemed to be headed for the pile of seed shells and dropped seeds under the bird feeder. My presence made the turtle uneasy and it scurried back into the vegetation.
I had been pondering the state of my soul and giving the Lord access to all of me as this happened. There are times when a writer can seem to have all inspiration evaporate and the path forward seem less certain than previously. This morning was one of those times. I was sent a turtle. You likely know the fable with the tag line, “Slow and steady wins the race.”
The photo above is amazing as the leaf in the foreground looks exactly like the turtle’s skin! Such vibrant skin. Though this one is silent, at times slow moving and also able to cover ground rather quickly, the presence of muscled legs, elongated neck , busy nose and sheltering house-shell all speak of intelligent design. I doubt I could ever have made a creature such as this. That thought alone humbles me to know the God I serve is mighty and creative beyond my imagination.
There is a path forward for me. Even if I lose sight of the trail from time to time, there is a plan for my life and the talents I have been given. I pray, “Open my eyes towards the next step. Keep me hopeful and joyous to do your will, O Lord. If possible, please train my fingers to type the word the correctly without always transposing the letters. ugh.”
There are times when quiet foraging for food is the right path. Other times when observation is called for. Always, always praising God is the answer. There is information that turtles can live a very long time, some fifty to one hundred years. I have to wonder how long this turtle has lived so very close my house and I never knew! God was not surprised. Only this little lamb.
O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. Psalm 34:3 KJV
